enquanto as propostas dos futuristas e constructivistas eram, respectivamente, adoptadas e namoradas pelas grandes narrativas politicas emergentes no inicio do século XX, surgia na holanda outro movimento de vanguarda que casava o modernismo com ideais de cariz religioso. agrupados à volta da revista de stijl vários artistas efectivavam a ligação entre a tradição iconoclasta e ascética do puritanismo com os princípios programáticos modernistas.

o grupo de stijl advocava a eliminação da obra artística de qualquer traço emocional, bem como a rejeição da representação da natureza na arte, elevando a pura abstracção à estética da nova sociedade industrial. as suas obras em áreas como o design de equipamento, a pintura e a arquitectura eram caracterizadas pela maxima simplicidade formal baseada em construções puramente geométricas.
